Chuck Norris wrote more than most action stars: two memoirs, a fact book, a book on personal philosophy, a political manifesto and a series of western novels. Here they are, ranked, with a note on which one to give.

1. Against All Odds: My Story (2004)

The best book he wrote, and the one to start with. A candid memoir covering his difficult childhood, his father's alcoholism, the Air Force, karate, Hollywood and his faith. It's the source for most of what's known about his early life, and it's more reflective than the tough-guy image suggests.

2. The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book: 101 of Chuck's Favorite Facts and Stories (2009)

The only fact collection he authored. Each fact gets a short story or comment from Norris, which is what makes it more than a novelty. The perfect gift for a fan of the site.

3. The Secret of Inner Strength: My Story (1988)

His first memoir, written at the height of the Cannon Films era. Covers the karate years in more detail than Against All Odds, and is the better read for martial artists.

4. The Secret Power Within: Zen Solutions to Real Problems (1996)

A short book of martial arts philosophy applied to everyday life. Slighter than the memoirs, but sincere, and a good fit for someone who trains.

5. The Justice Riders series (2006 onward)

Western novels co-written with Ken Abraham and others, following a group of Civil War veterans on the frontier. Undemanding, fast, and exactly what a fan of Walker would enjoy on a plane.

6. Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America (2008)

A political book. Your enjoyment will depend entirely on your politics; as a gift, know your recipient.

Not by Chuck, but about him

The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 Facts About the World's Greatest Human (2007), by Ian Spector, is the book that started the facts in print and the one Norris briefly sued over. It's a piece of internet history, and it's still in print.
