Chuck Norris died on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the age of 86, after a sudden medical emergency while in Hawaii. His family shared the news the following day.
The family's statement
"It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning. While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace."
The statement was posted to his official social accounts on March 20, 2026, and confirmed by the Associated Press, Reuters, NPR and CNN, among others. The family asked for privacy and pointed those wishing to honor him toward KickStart Kids, the foundation he founded in 1990.
What he leaves
- A competitive karate record that made him a six-time world champion and a Black Belt Hall of Famer.
- Two dozen films, including the defining action pictures of the Cannon Films era.
- Eight seasons of Walker, Texas Ranger.
- KickStart Kids, which continues to place martial arts instructors in public schools.

How the internet responded
Within hours the facts adapted. "Death didn't come for Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris went to see what it wanted." "Heaven has upgraded its security." "The Grim Reaper was given a lift." The jokes were, for a day, the way millions of people said goodbye to someone they had never met but had been quoting for twenty years. Fellow martial artists, co-stars from Walker and the Expendables cast, and public figures from across the spectrum paid tribute.
